non-profit vs. tax exempt

19 years 11 months ago #59445 by Serendipity
Hi Pam! This is not my bag, so I don't know if I can be of any assistance here, but why isn't your organization established as a non-profit? Who is making a monetary profit from your group?

non-profit vs. tax exempt was created by pam comeau
OK, I am so thoroughly confused.. can someone explain to me the difference between being non-profit (501c(3) status) and tax-exempt? We are trying to enlarge our scrip program and we need to have a tax-exempt number. We just confirmed that we are NOT officialy non-profit. CAn we become tax-exempt without being non-profit????? Also our business manager says we can't use the school's tax-exempt number, that the PTO has to have it's own.
Can anyone clue me in, PLEASE???
Thank you in advance!!
