Robert's Rules of Order not followed

20 years 2 months ago #58939 by Michelle B
If they aren't using Roberts Rules, then speak out of turn. Don't wait to be called on, print out the issue you want to speak about, pass it out at the door as the members come in and then during a pause, blurt out! If they aren't following Robert's, they can't call you out of order, but it will show that this IS important to you. (Don't expect the board to like you but the members may join the crusade)
I'd try the most diplomatic approach first but if all else fails, do as the romans do.

Replied by Farmer mom on topic RE: Robert's Rules of Order not followed
I don't understand your second post (above). I have invested a whole year of MY time attending meetings at which I have not been able to raise my issue because Robert's rules aren't being followed. I don't see how obeying their own by laws is going to waste anyone's time.

Also, I am trying to be proactive in this. I have spent plenty of time researching other ways to make money than selling junk food. I've offered to donate a 500+ pound pumpkin growing in my garden right now for use as a fund raising raffle or "pay to guess the weight and win the pumpkin" competition. I've also offered the services of myself and my family to help put on a fund raising run for the school.

p.s. you can't make someone follow Robert's Rules. you can try but trust me, we have better things to do with our precious time.

Or...be proactive about this issue. Come to the "table" with new ideas for fundraising that could replace the "junk food". I've been the secretary of our group for many years and what helps me listen is when a parent comes to us with not only an issue but a solution or ideas.

This could mean some time well spent online looking for information or a few minutes navigating this site ;) but I would hope you could find something that might get their attention in a positive light.

I do agree with the other posters, I just think (I'm a farm girl myself stuck in a suburb) you need away to show them your point without making them look....wrong.

Just remember, you can lead a cow to water but you can't make'em drink. But show them the water is good and cold (bear with me :D ) it might just be the best water they have ever had. ;)

At the beginning of a meeting, you may call for a point of order which applies to a current violation of parliamentary procedure, i.e. not including new business on the agenda.
Once you have called the point of order, you ask that new business be added to the current agenda in it's appropriate slot.
You do not address your issue at this time but when the new business is reached.
The catch, it is up to the chair, to acknowledge the violation and correct it.
They are to state, "the point of order is well taken" (meaning that the agenda will be corrected) or not well taken, with an explanation as to why this is not a violation to the rules.
You can appeal the chair's decision and it can be debated and brought it to a vote but it depends on how it can be handled.

If there is a fee to join your parent group (usually Nominal) pay it if you have not already. That way they cannot deny you by saying you are not a member. Then I would request a copy of their bylaws and use them against them to voice your opinions & concerns.

I responded to your other post on this matter and this all comes down to the fact that they don't agree with you, which is fine...we all need to agree to disagree sometimes. But the fact that they will not allow you a voice is deplorable.

I know you said you spoke with the administration earlier. But, I think you should speak with both the principal and the Superintendent again. Don't make this about the "Junk Food" issue. Make the issue that as a concerned parent you would like to express your opinion and concerns to them and they are denying you any access to that.

This is the major problem here. It would seem that then they do not allow anyone to voice an opinion that is not inline with theirs. You should also try to garner support from other parents...Again my advice would be to not to make this about the "junk food" and make it all about their exclusionary tacticts and they fact they will not allow you to adress them.
