How to persuade board members to become non-profit

20 years 2 months ago #58912 by Eric Rector
You could always call the IRS and ask them to audit your PTO then I bet they would change their mind lol.

Seriously, explain to them about liability of taxes. I had one parent make the statement when we were setting up "we are not going to be dealing with that much money so why should we bother" I then asked how much she thought we would raise in funds each year. She guessed between $50,000 and $75,000. I told her that personaly I think we will do better than that but taking her numbers did she think the IRS would let us slide when they go after people that only make $20,000 a yr?

granted I am talking worst case situation here but if common sence does not prevail sometimes Fire and Brimstone (not to mention IRS fines and posible jail time for tax evasion) might.

If IRS goes after a PTO the Officers are the ones that are going to fall. I love our school and our PTO but I am not going to put my butt on the burner because someone does not want to be hastled to do things the right way.

I am a new president of our PTO, and I am wanting to become a non-profit organization, but most of my board members believe that it is a bad idea. Our school has been opened for 5 years and they still don't know if this is a good idea. How can I get them to my side? I feel that this is something that we really need to do. Thank you,any advice would be greatly appreciated.
