Our bylaws also state that as long as you pay your membership you dues you have a vote. However we do have it stated that you must have 2/3 of the board to constitute a quorum. and that anyone present at a general assemby meeting constitutes a quorum.

** Side note if you have just writen your bylaws you may want to check with the IRS regs on nonprofit we are in the process of changing our bylaws to ensure we can recieve nonprofit status. We have been in existance for 9 years and this has never been done even if you feel you will not need to apply ( you do not have to based on the money you take in) but you never know when you may need it.

According to our bylaws as long as you pay your $5 yearly dues you can vote. It has no bearing on the amount of meetings you attend. But, we do have the 2/3 majority for a vote to pass.

You may want to change your bylaws to get you through the first year. You can always amend them later as you are established, if you see fit to.

Not everything needs a vote! We only vote on issues when there is a division in opinions on what to do. Example...If you say I would like to do a fall catalog for a fundraiser. How do you all feel about that? Is there anyone opposed? As long as it seems like everyone is okay with that, then there is no reason to pass a vote on it. Your secretary can note in the minutes that it was discucssed and you all agreed to do it.

You already have ideas about some of the things you want to do. Is there some reason you are inclined to think that the other people are not going to want to do those things?

We are getting ready to have our first ever PTO meeting at our school. We have not had a PTO at the school before. I wrote the Bylaws based on a topic I got off of this forum.
The forum was discussing voting previlages at the meetings and some one suggested that a member must attend at least 50% of the meetings in order to have voting privlages.

This sounded good at the time --so I used it in writing our bylaws.
BUT- what do you do when you are just starting a PTO and you want to be able to vote on the year's goals and fundraisers. WE have 23 people signed up for the PTO but I will only have 8 people attending the first meeting.
I know that most bylaws state that you must have a quorum of 2/3 the members to vote -- what happens when you get less then your quorum and you need to set goals and fundraisers etc.?
