board members/employees of school

20 years 5 months ago #58705 by Daddio044
Our by-laws allow for it. We also have 2 special committes (that are not part of the by-laws) which are teacher rep (3 teachers) and administration (for the principle and vice principle).

Having these people on the board make it much easier to commmunicate with the school - we have ready accesses to them.

It would need to depend on the bylaws. Ours also states that you must be a parent/ gaudian of a current student, or staff member. By that definition the custiodian may accept a position as a board member. We cureently have 2 teacher's on our board one of whom is also a parent, not including myself as a sub. I personal think you need to have atleast one teacher on the board after all T is for teacher. (pTo) We are accually in the process of amending our bylaws to include a teacher liaison position to ensure the staff a voting right on the board.

Our by-laws state that in order to hold an office you must: have a child at the school,OR be on staff at the school, or both. We try to have a staff member as treasurer for convenience. Our pres-elect just put in an application for a full time position, she is a sub aide and I am a sub aide. I have been a sub aide for nearly 4 years, serving as VP, Pres., and I am now the sec.-elect. Last year's sec. was a sub teacher.

They might both be! ;)
There have been other posts on this board about the various pros and cons of having staff people/teachers on the PTO board--some people think it's a great idea; some don't. If the PTO's bylaws don't specifically prohibit staff from serving on the board, and the staff's contract doesn't prohibit it, then there's probably no legal reason why they can't be on the board. It's possible, though, that the other school's PTO's bylaws prohibit staff taking such a position.

Can you have a board member that is an employee of the school? We currently have three positions filled by teachers at our school and another elementary here in town was told by their principal that they couldn't have an employee as a board member. Who is right?
