There are a few things that need to be considered before embarking down the incorporation/501(c)3 road. I can help you thru the process as our group did it, but before starting, could you answer a couple of questions for me? What are your state's requirements for incorporating? What informational form are you talking about filing with the IRS? How much does your group fundraise (total, not just profit)? Do you accept donations or grants? What type of info are you looking for to convince your group to apply for non-profit status?
If these questions seem to be involved, it's because they will dictate how you should proceed.
If you email me direct, I can provide examples of the paperwork and application that we filed in order to obtain non-profit status. It isn't difficult, just a little time consuming.
Good luck.

Ok...I want the real deal here. we are a PTO that is not incorpatated and do not file with the IRS except for the information form. We have been running a PTO at our school for 5 years now. I want to know if we decide to become incorparated this year and to be a 501(c)3 school how hard is it to do and how long does it take to have this status? I have been reading everything I can find about this and I have a headache. If anyone here has not started out at this status and then became incorparated please let me know your experience. I greatly appreciate all your responses. I would love to have something to print out to the board and show them what real PTO's are saying about this. Thanks again!!
