PTO Pres,
You can also call the IRS and apply for an EIN over the phone. They will issue it right then and there.
Have you asked for back statements from the bank?
PTO Prez - as you try to unravel the financial history, you might find some good info in the old check registers. Hopefully, the check writers made a notation in the check register for each check written against the PTO account. If you review the check registers carefully, and categorize the checks that were written, you can get a basic idea of how the money was spent. You can also see where the money came from that was deposited. You may not have a nice neat transaction history report, but the info might be hiding in the registers.
Worse case? Open a new bank account this summer with the minimum required to waive fees. Let all the outstanding activity filter through the old account, then move the balance to the new account. Start fresh with good financial controls and consider the past a lesson to learn from. (Assuming you don't suspect any fraud in the past).
Well we do have an EIN number that is in the box! I have no idea where the number came from to set up the account. the bank says it should start with a 56- and it doesn't!
Now I will have to look into all of that too!
This whole thing was very disorganized for several years. I will try my best to straighten it out.
We have NEVER made close to 25k. I think this year has the most in the bank account that has ever been there!
and thats only about 11k with both savings and checking! We only had one fundraiser this year and it didn't go over well! So I think this year we only make about 5k (with fundriaser, fall festival, box tops and cartridges)
thanks for all the advice, looks like I need to dig deeper!
