I wanted to send a special thanks to Dave for a quick response to my post I will definitely take your advice and the info you provided is greatly appreciated.
I also wanted to share a site with you all that literally blew my mind. These people have got it together in every way and I love the site ... great for a beginner like me
Congradualtions! Looks like you are organizing a PTO!
My first advice is slow down. Dont be in a hurry to get your by laws together!
Take your time and print this email for all those invloved
Been here and done this and I wish I had had the PTO Today web site to help then. Look to your left see that Useful resources link? Click it, explore - nearly everything you need to know is there, have your other members log on here, get registerred and look around.
After you all have done that then post some questions to the boards - you will find a lot of people that are doing this that will be more than happy to help - give suggestions, make comments and help you all along.
Some other things you will need to know are in the PTO today magazine, call them, subscribe or whatever - get the back issues on forming a PTO I do not remember which issues you will need but the admins will.
Now your state laws about incorporation - you need to learn about them or better yet have one of those other volunteers do it and report back to everyone else.
As a new President dont feel overwhelmed learn to deligate Dont try to do it all yourself, deligate
But above all else dont rush, dont think this all has to be done tomorrow cause it doesnt - you will find if you all take that approach you might just have fun doing it!
We have 15 ladies who attend our meetings and so far the meetings have just been discussion, no action has been taken. When we elected officers, people just shouted out what it was that they wanted to be, or that they wanted others to be. Needless to say, some people got stuck with jobs in the PTO that they did not want or could not handle. Recently, a lady, who was declared by her friend as the President of the PTO, called and asked me to take the responsibility, and I live at the school anyway, so I agreed. Now I have 2 weeks to come up with bylaws (no idea where to start or what to include). I am also thinking of a re-election, as the lady I mentioned was not the only one who got stuck. I thought I could make something kind of like a nominee ballot. This would have a list of the needed officers on the left side of the page, a description of duties in the next column, and a space in a third column for nominees. After that we would have an official vote within our PTO. If anyone has them, I need to get a sample list of by-laws to help me along, and a sample list of officers and their duties. Thanks in advance!
