We have sponsored our local troop & pack for the last 51 years. We received our new charter last night. the school allows them to meet in the school for meetings & certain events in the school. However, the PTO has nothing to do with their operation. If we need assistance with something, we will ask for their assistance, but they have their schedule of trips & required events so we work together on scheduling time. They will be painting our new blacktop with foul lines, hopscotch boards, tic tac toe boards, etc to make it more fun for the kids, but we are working together on when it can be done.
As President, I have to sign their paperwork to "become" a member of the scouts, but in name only. They do not use the name of the PTO for any reason, they do not use our TIN for any reason. Money is never exchanged.

Thanks to those of you that responded. There have been no problems in the past. I was the PTO President last year and we have never been involved other than the charter. This is directly a result of a manipulative, controlling scoutmaster that did not get her way last year, and a new PTO President that believes the lies she is being told. They want the den dues to be run through the pack treasury, and the BSA Nationwide insurance policy to be changed to accomodate them! Unbelievable...this is exactly what happens when people don't check their facts - but that was a good idea to have the PTO contact BSA at a district level...Thanks!
My husband pretty much says the same thing, he's been in scouting forever!! At all levels : local and district. He says that if the PTO is having problems with the scouts that they should go through the district executive or unit commisioner. He said that most sponsors don't really get involved much with the scouts, but said it sounds like there may be issues between your board and the scouts. Good Luck

As an assistant cubmaster myself, and as a former PTO secretary, I have to say that when our PTO sponsored us, they did not have much involvement at all. Basically, they gave us a name to put on our charter and a place to meet. The place to meet wasn't even up to them, that was O.K.'d by the school. If we ever needed anything, we had to go to a PTO meeting and request it. It then had to be voted on. There have never been any demands on us by the PTO or vice versa. We have our own insurance in case of accidents and have our own fundraisers and dues to pay for things we need. We did sometimes participate in PTO activities, but other than that we really didn't have alot to do with them. I think there is something wrong or something happened in the past if you are getting a list of demands from anyone involving cub scouts. Just my opinion.

Our PTO chartered our Boy Scouts at our school. How much involvement does the PTO board have over a chartered organization? We have recently received a list of "demands" from the new PTO Board, based on false allegations of the control freak co-scoutmaster. What kind of demands can a PTO board make over Boy Scouts of America, which is governed by its own policies/procedures and insurance?
