Thank you Tim very much for that reply.

These particular PTA people were wanted everyone to go to the PTA for everything. No one else could have fundrasiers, no one could ask for donations no one had the freedom to do what they wanted.

Basically there is two women wanting the control. Why ever would they want that responsibility, I have NO CLUE..but they earned to be the Gods to the rest of the school with the aboility to pass out funds at their choosing.

Well, no one wanted that and other people stepped up to the plate to raise funds for other things.

We have had to form a fundraiser list because again, the pta would tell others that everyone had to go to them first to even get PERMISSION to do anything. That is nice for them since they can just say, "Oh we are sorry, we are already doing that idea ".

So the principal said everyone had to clear a fundraiser with her first, well, obviously that hasn't happened. lol

I will talk to the principal and figure it out. The VP tried to make an issue out of a classroom selling craft thingys at an upcoming event because she was going to have a craft fair way later after that. She figured it would cut into her sales.

SIgh..I am sorry I am rambling, but then again, I am sure this place is used to that! LOL

Hi Leamoon -

Glad you've foud our site.

There's a lot to your message (following bylaws, fundraising, more), but I thought I'd just try to address the fundraising issue. I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that you've received a far too strict interpretation of fundraising regulations. I've never heard that a fundraiser *must* have a specific stated purpose before its approved.

In order to get approved for nonprofit status, a group has to have a mission. That mission can be fairly broad (work to support the students and faculty at ABC School). Your fundraisers should support that mission, but you can see that a whole bunch of things can be considered supporting that mission (new playground, teacher appreciation, field trips, speakers, classroom supplies, yadda, yadda).

When the Cancer Society raises money, for example, they don't have to say that "this walkathon will support Dr. Jones' research." Instead, participants and donors know that the funds will somehow help the cause of fighting cancer. And that's OK.

Hope that helps.

(Doesn't mean that always raising funds just to raise funds is a recommended practice, but I don't see real legal issues in what you describe.)

Ok,

first let me apologize if I am over stepping my bounds, it's just that this board seems to have ALOT of PTA background too. Our PTA has ALOT of problems. They are working at changing to a PTO, but I am a beleiver it is the people that make the group, not the ORG..anywho...I really think the president is not on the up and up with funds, etc. This is a PTA question...I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere else and I am hoping one of you can help.

Well, everytime we turn around the PRES and VP are telling other fundraiser volunteers that the money they raise OUTSIDE OF PTA needs to go into PTA. This is causing alot of frustration with the teachers, and student council volunteers, etc..because the PTA treats us like we are against PTA because we have done a fundraiser that does not involve them or put money into the PTA account. That is only one of the illegal things they keep doing and they had to be stopped.

So, our new principal called in district and had a training session.

One of the things that as made clear is that PTA cannot mix funds & just have fundrasiers for *whatever*. That there had to be a goal first, voted upon, discussed in the minutes, etc.

BUT the goal could be general such as *providing more playground and school activies*

Under that headline, many fundraisers could be done to reach those goals.

My question is:

Can the PTA president, VP, and possibly other baord members just VOTE on multipal fundraisers without the individual fundraisers EVER being discussed at open meetings & put in the minutes and passed?

Is it the headline/goal that only has to be in the minutes once, and then they have free reign on doing as many fundrasiers as they want, or does each fundraiser have to be ASIGNED to where the funds are going?

Meaning, they can have ten different events and spread it anywhere they want...or do they have to set the goal and state IN THE MINUTES where EACH fundraiser profit is going?

I hope this is clear. We have an issue where the PRES and VP GRAB every donation resource, and have *in the works* every type of fundraiser you can imagine, then when a class wants to raise funds, etc..these two women pipe up and say *YOU CAN'T DO THAT, WE ALREADY ARE* and they close doors for others everywhere we turn!!

Can someone please help me, because it happened again today with a craft fair. The VP said that they were planning a craft fair and no one has heard a word about it!!
