I am not an attorney or a CPA - however, my PTO experience leads me to answer this way - has your organization been granted 501(c)(3) - or is that (3)(c)? status? If so, then you are recognized as an organization formed as a not-for-profit organization and you may put yourself out to be as such. If not - technically you are not and the donations would not be deductible on a personal or business tax form. The process can take some time, and costs between $150 and $500 depending upon your budget over a 3-year period, but in the long run is worth it. Hope that helps.
Just recently I was elected the P.T.O. President for our School. Not 3 weeks into the planning of the Fall Festival a question was brought to my attention. Are we allowed to to tell donors that their donations are Tax Deductable? How do we go about wording this and stay legal?
