You are on the right track but not to the finish line yet. Your committee's job is to present the new or revised bylaws at a meeting and then the following month, there should be a vote to accept or reject them. It is not a decision that can be made by a committee alone, the committee only presents it's "recommendations" and the whole assembly votes on whether to approve or reject. We just revised ours last year. It is not a fun process, and not everyone will agree on all items but it is well worth the stress when they are completed. Good luck and keep pushing, bylaws are vital!
Did you take the new bylaws before the board to have them ratified? You must do that in order for them to be binding. I am in the process of trying to get out board to change some things in our bylaws. It's like pulling teeth.
I'm the president of a well established pto, that has never had formal bylaws written down. At the end of last year I asked for volunteers to help establish and implement bylaws for our pto. Of course no one signed up. After some prodding I finally got 2 people to help on the committee and sign and adopt the bylaws. Now I have a very upset clique in the pto, because they feel they have been side stepped and what we did isn't legal or binding.
Anyone else have a similar problem in the past? Please advise.
