Because you are a relatively new school, I was wondering if your organization has filed for tax status. My understanding from some of the other threads (see PTO/PTA) is that bylaws and articles of association have to be filed with this and your PTO needs this to identify its tax status. This may be your "way" to bring in the need for a set of bylaws. I would recommend researching this and taking your findings to the principal or PTO president. Go prepared to answer any questions about it without truly showing your hand (read...don't bring up the problem issues within the group, push the issues of legality of the group.) JHB really seems to know her stuff about this so look for some of her posts! Good luck!
I am a member of a PTO that is approximately 3 years old. They do not have bylaws. We currently have chairpeople who are less than forthright regarding the monies and the members are growing concerned. There is a general attitude among the executive committee that they are running a dictatorship rather than a democratic organization. In addition they are involved in so many other committees and organizations that they cannot fulfil their duties to the PTO. Is there anything we can do to force them to step aside without bylaws or do we have to wait and vote them out. Their activities are borderline illegal.
