I'd advocate finding a group of like-minded individuals at your school and then working toward bylaws. You'll have all kinds of troubles if you don't at least have a rulle book to go by. Your bylaws are your rule book.
Take the last two months of the school year and get bylaws together and approved. Then move on to doing great work for kids.
thanks for the reply, i don't think the bank account has much to do with it. this present pto has not raised any money this year and there was only about 3k left over from previous year. i think the principle has other issues. it is her first year, it is a catholic school and i think the priest feels he has some say, i am not exactly sure. i have also talked to two pto presidents and they said the principle has no decision making at pto meetings and any decision or should i say motion, should be voted on. especially one this important. we are getting all of our info together and are presenting it at the next meeting on may 13th. any other info let me know thanks.
The first thing you do is find out who has their hands in your cookie jar! Was there money left over from previous years? Time for an audit? Find out WHY the principal and superintendent want this particular group to continue. If I were to take a guess, I would say it comes down to the bank account. If the officers aren't doing their job correctly, it is up to your membership body (let everyone vote) to decide who runs the show for next year. At this late date, you may have to call a special meeting to nominate, so that you can vote new officers in before school ends. Get yourself a copy of Robert's Rules Of Conduct and start from there. Call around and get copies of other school's bylaws. Robert's Rules should guide you til then, and you can vote that in at your special meeting, along with term restrictions if that is what you want. I would hunt around this site, looking at all the 'bylaw' topics to get an idea of what everyone else does for term restrictions and then decide. Our school has no term restrictions. Some schools have it where the prez is a one year term with the veep moving up automatically. Some schools have a 3/4 override rule for their term restrictions. It will be up to your membership body to determine that. Meanwhile, as I said in the opening line, Find out who has their hands in your cookie jar!
i am a new member on the pto at my daughters school. i am not an officer. our pto presently has not had bylaws since anyone can remember. and past officers have only had a 1 year term. we were to have nominations for new officers at the last meeting april 15th. but the new principal made the decision after speaking with the superintendent that she wants this present group to run a 3 year term.(this present pto has had 2 meetings from sept-april and the vp has not shown up at any and the president has shown up at 1. and their fund raising and teacher assistance
capabilities are horrible. what do i do. dkuhn
