If your PTO has an EIN (employer's ID number, also called a tax id number), you can confirm that with the IRS at 1-800-829-8815. Our PTO has an EIN, but I have never come across any type of certificate in my files. A common misconception is that, by having an EIN, a PTO is tax-exempt. Not necessarily. The IRS explained it to me this way: having an EIN is like having a social security number -- it doesn't prove you have a job. If you don't have an EIN, the IRS will assign you one over the phone, I believe.
If you are a registered 501c3 organization (i.e. charitable/tax-exempt/non-profit), the IRS will also be able to confirm that for you. If your PTO is registered, then in the past, someone filed the proper paperwork with the IRS(Form 1023)to register your PTO with the IRS. Even then, when your PTO is granted 501c3 status, you get only a lengthy letter, not a formal certificate per se.
In our state, we must also complete a form that asserts we are 501c3 and present a copy to any seller to avoid paying state sales tax on PTO purchases. Hope this info helps!

After attending a recent Board meeting we discovered that we do not have a copy of our EIN Certificate !!! My question is, does anyone know how to go about retaining a copy of this certificate? I have no idea where to begin, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!!
