Our PTSO is completely separate from our school..we have always had our own bank accounts with two board members as signers..however 2 years ago the principal asid that we had been using the school's tax id..when sending thank you's to businesses who had donated...and that was not right. We had to apply with the IRS for recognition as a 501C and now have our own tax id number - it cost us $500.00 to do. We are the only parent group in our district who operates this way..a little strange but we have a lot of control...we can pretty much purchase most anything our parents approve and our principal is great...earlier this year we ran into some trouble in purchasing our new school sign as the school will need to maintain it for many years to come and we got around this problem by putting a maintenace amount in the budget for keeping the sign up...hoe this helps...you situation sounds awful!!
If you are a PTA then you have charter units (units that are in charge of your area, and then you have your State PTA level..If you are a PTO then you do not have this type of grouping..If you are unsure who your District Leader is for your area contact your State PTA office they can put you i touch with poeple from PTA who can help...If you are a PTO or other group then you are basically on your own, and need to work this out with teh help of maybe the school board or a 3rd party mediator.
Ummm ok you kinda lost me there,What exactly does it mean by being chartered? I know that we are a nonprofit 501C organisation.But as far as being "chartered" i'm not sure what that would be.
You stated you were a PTA..If this is correct get in contact with your district director immediately!--Fixing eletions, making the schedule etc is not the principals decision or right--she has control over the building, but not on what postion the PTA should take, what events they would like to do, etc etc..hweck even the president of the UNited States doesn't have powers like that--If you are a PTA that is chartered than the prinicpal cannot dissolve your PTA- Only your state/national or membership by a vote and oher steps which must be done 1st can dissolve your unit--You need help from up above to gently get the principal put back into her postion and take care of her responsibilities--Doesn't sound like it will beeasy- but I think it would be worth every attempt-..
You have my sympathy for the situation you a dealing with regarding your principal.
However, as far as the city/school district policy (which is a separate issue), - yes, they can do this and probably should. The policy seems very reasonable to me. It seems like a pretty general policy to ensure they have some ground rules established.
Our school is not only run "solely and entirely" by our principle,which i personally believe,including many parents.That the only reason she has remained with her position is because she is "politically connected" with out city's Mayor and commisioner.(they are family members)
Not only does she "make her own rules"
Gives the PTA the dates for our meetings.
She also disagrees and "modifies" everything and anything she is presented with by us.
She steals all of our ideas for programs and
then takes credit for them.
She never ever attends our meetings, and always has a problem with what was discussed and what our position as the PTA is.She basically doesn't want any discussions about anything concerning the school other than fundraising and initiatives for the children.
She actually asked me to "fix the elction" so that one lady would not have a position in the pta(i later found out she was a teacher that had asked to transfer because she could not stand by and watch her "run the school" her way ,and do whatever she wanted)
Now i found out that the City Board had made this Policy .....Could someone tell me could they do this????

SCHOOL-CONNECTED ORGANIZATIONS
In each school, any organization consisting of parents/guardians,
school staff and friends of the school shall be a board-approved
voluntary organization. It may not establish educational policy,
participate in the administration of the school, or authorize
management and direction of school affairs.
Such organizations shall have as their objectives the promotion
of pupil welfare: the development of close relationships between
the home and the school; and the development between educators
and the public of such united efforts as will secure for every pupil
in the schools the best kind of educational program possible.
Organizations shall not use the district's name in their titles
without the board's express consent. Such permission to use
the district's name does not constitute permission to act as
the district's representative.
The board shall make it a practice not to interfere in the internal
workings of such groups.
Permission to hold regular meetings of such associations in school
facilities will be extended by the board of education for a particular
school year, in accordance with policy # 1330.
The school principal or another professional staff member designated
by the principal may serve as adviser to the general parent/teacher
organization. All members of the professional staff shall be encouraged
to join the organization and to participate in its activities.
