Once received - how does the actual 501c returned document look like. I only see the applications on web site. I am running our VFW golf outing and companies want the 501c current up to date document or non profit tax return current form. How does it actually look like with a example.

This may sound like a stupid question to some of you but what are the benefits are there to a small a small pto(under 300 students) to going through all the steps to get official. This seems like a lot of effort for our low activity level.

We filed in early Oct. and received our letter the day before Thanksgiving, so about 6 weeks. It is hard to tell how much I spent on the paper work - it depends on what you include. I updated the bylaws and incorporated for state purposes, so that took some time. The paperwork for this was probably only about 6 hours, but I spent much more time in researching the issue. For the federal data, I probably spent 20 hours or so on getting everything organized, copied, approved, mailed, etc. It is hard to estimate because I did it over a period of time. As I found more information and talked to more people, I made more changes so it is not like I just did everything once!

Thank you all for posting so much helpful information about his process. Can any of you tell me about how much time you had to spend on the paperwork and how long it took from the time you sent it in until the time you heard back?

Just wanted to provide some feedback to this note and many others on this topic. We filed Form 1023 for our PTO in October. The PTO has been up and running for many years, but had never filed for §501(c)(3)status. On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we received our letter from the IRS that determined we were tax exempt under §501(c)(3). It took about 6 weeks and I had no questions from or changes requested by the IRS. We can now use this as a model for the other PTO's on our district. So it is not so hard to do, and definitely worth it.

Thanks!
