I have a quick question. I have asked on several different forums with no anwers. On our board there is a disagreement in regards to what kids. To half the board they only want to spend money on items for "all" the kids. Another half of the board understands that sometimes only a few under 5 need things that other kids don't get (because of money). What do you think?
The money should be spent on the children, staff and school (i.e. playground). The only thing our PTO has requested and received, was a bulletin board which was obtained with Ingles receipts. On this we post all PTO announcements and other school-related events.
I think the money should be spent on the children and staff as stated above. If you are asking if it is okay to have a holiday party for the PTO board I would say no way! I say this because this was brought up in my district with a school PTO board doing this. They would but gifts for PTO board members and have a holiday party.
I have been involved in PTO for five years. Always in the past (and now) PTO has paid for things like security system, air conditioners, computers, laminator, etc. There has hardly been any money spent on the children. Only thing for field trips is half of monies from Santa workshop goes to only the 5th grade to help with their trips (whose parents do not help with project). I am president this year and am trying to change our money spending towards the children and their needs. I have upset the principal and he has been giving me and the other officers a hard time, but we are still pushing for the children!!!!!!!
Besides spending money on the kids which does seem to be the main reason we are here we do spend money in other areas. We use it for teachers and staff. I also beleive it depends on how much money you have and what your projected budget looks like. We have donated money to the local high school band when they were raising money for a major trip and came to our school for a 'demonstation' (450.00). We also purchase thankyou gifts for volunteers (chairpersons). Help send the staff participants to space camp with our Challenger Club so they do not have to take this money out of their pockets just because they chaired this club. I realy think it depends on how much money you have. When we had little it all went to the kids, but now that we have more we see that by spending a little money, we bring in MORE money,(and volunteers) and spread the wealth.
