Hi there,
Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Hope it all goes well from here. Have a great school year and please stay in touch. Happy to help along the way!
Thank you so much for your input.
Yes, she'd been told face to face over and over to stop.
We weren't dealing with a stable individual. I say "weren't" because today when we learned of yet another donation that she'd solicited (again without authorization), I called her on the phone and told her that what she was doing was illegal and that she was to ask for no more donations in the name of our school.
Granted, she'd been told that on numerous occasions; only by people kind of begging her to stop. I think when I brought up the illegality of her actions, she finally began to listen.
She was at the school (it was my volunteer day) within an hour and telling me and the president that she was done with PTO.
Mission accomplished.
Hi Maj66,
We can see how this is a difficult situation. When you said she was repeatedly told not to do this, was it by email or in person? Just wondering because sometimes a one-on-one conversation can really help turn things around. If you sat down with her and explained why she shouldn't do what she did, she may also have a chance to explain to you why she did it, and maybe -- I know it's just a maybe! -- you could turn this around, point her in a direction that's more positive.
We'd say prohibiting someone from being part of your group is a big, big deal and should be carefully considered before those steps are taken. It's not that it is illegal, per se, but you would need to discuss this with your principal, consult your bylaws, your regional reps if you are a PTA, and make sure you are taking all the appropriates steps to remove her.
We have a member (not a board member; just a general member) who during our last fundraising effort took it upon herself to solicit donations in the name of our pto from numerous businesses. She was not told to do this and was told to stop multiple times by board members and the chairperson of that fundraising committee. As far as we know, she has turned in the donations she received; however, some of her actions have bordered on criminal. Aside from that, her very unprofessional manner has made our organization look bad to many businesses.
Because she was told continually to stop and didn't, we feel that unless she is officially removed as a member, she'll continue to cause problems in our organization.
Is it legal to kick out a general member?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
