Suspect Embezzlement

The treasurer before me held onto a folder of receipts for a while, intending to put them in order; he was a little embarrassed that they were such a mess. Could that be the issue here?

You can request copies of the bank statements for the past several months, then you can review them and see if they look problematic.

If neither treasurer is responding to the board's request for information, invoke a higher power. Share your concerns with the school principal and/or district and ask that they send a letter to the parent organization President requiring a third-party audit of the financial records to be completed by "x" date.

What do you do if you suspect a treasurer may have embezzled money? What do you do if the "old" treasurer will not turn over the PTO checkbook or other financial records to the "new" treasurer?
