Oh--and as to your question on suggestions or rules--check out your bylaws and see if there are circumstances that result in the ability to challenge someones membership. After reading these boards for a while, I recommended those get placed into effect in our school. Above that, there are no overarching "PTO rules" that would govern something like this. That's one of the differences between PTOs and PTAs.
As I stated above; were I in this type of position (and frankly with four boys home over the summer parenting under the influence is not too far off the mark) I'd step down to avoid any association with my personal predicament and the organization I've been elected to serve.
NOW--and something that perhaps is not clear or I am misreading--IF the charges were in place prior to the election and the president elect were put in place then I can understand the point that she was voted in and ought to serve without reconsideration.
If however, the charges came afterward, I would approach the president-elect and ask her to place herself on some sort of "non active" status until the charges are resolved.
The great things about this board is everyone gets to voice their opinion. Like guilty until proven innocent, it's one of those things some smart guys put into place a while ago (not you Tim).

Liberal thinking has nothing to do with it.
You may or may not allow this "type" of person to be around your children. BUT these people VOTED their president in. They chose this person.
Whether you like to think so or not, people are INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty. Period.
Stop and think about it. If you were stuck in a predicament (sp?) whether it be drugs, embezzlement, DUI. Would you want people to think that you are guilty with out the benefit of the doubt?
Although I do believe that if found guilty they should be asked to step down.
The "cloud" that you speak of is going to be over this persons head and administration undoubtly whether they are proven innocent or guilty.
Sorry-I'd certainly broach this person about stepping down until the charges are cleared and putting in place a temporary "Acting Presdient" (perhaps one of the VPs). Once the charges are cleared then the president can assume his/her duties without having this cloud hanging over their head (and over the groups head).

In fact-were I under this type of scrutiny (which I would not ever be), I would step down in order to ensure an personal taint I carried was not carried over to the organization I was selected to lead.
Once the issues are cleared, lead the parade to get the person back in charge as long as she is the right person for the position (which is a big if in my mind if she were actually arrested for a drug charge).
I Have a question that i need help with. Our newly elected president that assumes duties Aug. 1st was just recently arrested for a drug related incident. This person has not yet been convicted, however, other members are questioning whether this person should resign given the circumstances. Some members are in support of her staying on and others think it is not a good idea. Any suggestions or rules that I could look at on how this should all be handled?? Thank you so much!!
