I'm interested in the reply, as well. Since I'm encountering the same problem with my VA PTA. I called the IRS and was told that failing to file taxes as a non-profit small business with gross annual receipts totaling less than $25K was not currently being penalized, but that a company can lose it's tax exemption status if a return is not filed for more than 3 years.

I am new to my school's PTA board. It turn out the past board stopped paying dues to the PTA a few years back. They did nothing else just continued on as they were. I suspect this is a problem. How much of a problem is it?
They were also quite bad at keeping any records so a self audit is almost impossible. Do we need to disband and reform? We are in NY and I do not believe filings with the state are necessary for a PTA but should they have been filing with the IRS?
Thanks for any help/advice/words of encouragement.
