Rescinding a vote

Thanks for the feedback. The way I am understanding this is that a only a motion, NOT a vote can be rescinded. But as I continue to read, a vote can be rescinded by 2/3 without notice, or majority with notice, if you are still at the meeting and that which has been voted on hasn't yet happened (ie bought/sold, what have you..) I hope I processed this correctly.

Thanks, Jewel.

I learned something new today. I've also posted your question on the Robert's Rules of Order website in the event that you would like to see additional responses. Here is the link:

It's called a motion to rescind -kindly called a "bring back" motion. It can be made by any person regardless of how they voted previously on the question. It requires a 2/3 vote if no notice is given or a majority of the entire membership. It can be made IF whatever you want rescinded can ACTUALLY BE rescinded. That is, it hasn't happened yet (been done, been bought). See RONR in Brief pg. 60-62.
If you were still at the meeting that the motion was voted on, you would use the motion to reconsider. Since that meeting has past, this motion- to rescind- would be in order.

There is no rescinding of a vote. The time to clarify the motion and understand the issue is before the vote, not after.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to rescind a vote? I had a parent ask me this because they hadn't understood what they were voting for and wanted to rescind. There is nothing in our by-laws about this, so I was wondering if this has ever come up in other PTOs.
