That sounds like a good plan. You are leaving in a professional manner and with your head held high.
I don't at all blame you for being angry. You are giving your time and effort on behalf of the children of your school for no pay and no recognition in the first place. To then be slandered on top of it is enough to make anyone infuriated.
I am a big believer in karma. I've seen it in action time and again. Even scripture says that "He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword". Practically speaking, that means that these two will cultivate an atmosphere where they will, eventually, get treated the same way they've treated you by others they bring on to the board after you resign. It shouldn't take too long -- maybe a year or two, for it all to come back and bite them in the tail.
I scanned in all the documents from when I took over to date, so I have copies if I need them.
I'm getting phone calls from people - people I know, and who know me and know this isn't me - asking what's up between me and the presidents as there is obviously a discord that was apparent at the meeting.
My plan is to arrive at the next meeting with an extensive (documented ad nauseum) treasurer's report, then also have a letter from the bank stating I am no longer involved in any way on the account, and my letter of resignation. I'll present the entire thing to the membership, hand over my books and records to the presidents and leave.
I know I'll never get an apology, but I'm just mad right now!
I would make copies, but also if you haven't done anything wrong-would not worry about it.
PTO Addict;147601 wrote: I have been treasurer for our PTA, now converting to a PTO for my second year now. Last year was wonderful. This year, the co-presidents stated before they even met me that they were going to replace me.
The entire year they have been hostile to me, called me a liar, all but accused me of having something to hide in the books because our checks only required on signature. So we added a second one which makes my job so much harder. They continually harp that they never approved the budget - we approve it at the end of the previous year as per our bylaws. Neither co-president ever attended a meeting last year.
I was not able to attend this month's meeting, and had several members tell me how they drug my name through the mud, stating that I was lying about bills, was disorganized in my book keeping, etc. I gave a very detailed treasurer's report to a friend, and they tried to NOT let her give it. The biggest reason was because we approved $1,000 for an expense, they took it upon themselves to extend the event and incur an additional $400 in charges, then stated I lied about the invoice after my friend presented it. Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessive compulsive. I can account for every penny, every date, ad nauseum. I have all the documentation, invoices, etc. to back up everything.
They have stated they refuse to have anything to do with anything before the school year started (even though their term started July 1) and will not participate in an audit. The school is requiring an audit, and I can't audit myself!
I am going to resign. Before I do, I am making copies of everything, but I want to know what steps I should take to cover my you know what. I want an audit done and a statement signed that everything was in order when I left. But they won't participate. I'm beginning to feel I need to contact an attorney.
Thank you for the update. It sounds like you are handling everything professionally and with the least emotion possible.
*I also want to demand a public apology at the next meeting*
Forget it. You won't get it or you'll get a surly, insincere one right before they defend their actions. Instead, I advise that you state that you understand that you were slandered at the last board meeting in your absence and that this is incredibly inappropriate behavior for adults, much less officers of a board. Further, you can state that this behavior violated the Code of Conduct in your organization's by-laws (if there is a ethics or conduct statement there) and to behave in such a manner is grounds for censure by the board should you choose to pursue it.
Then, I would state that there have been motions adopted by the co-presidents without proper executive board approval. State that every motion "voted" on in this manner is not in accordance with the procedures outlined in the by-laws and, therefore, are not in effect. Give them the choice that they can either pledge to begin operating according to the by-laws, or a formal complaint with the state PTA will be made.
Well, I met with the principals, gave my side of the story. I was careful to not make it a bash the co-presidents meeting, but rather, here is what has gone on, here is what they are doing they are not allowed to be, etc. They agreed with some of the things I said and said they would be calling the co-presidents to tell them they can't do certain things they have stated they will be doing.
Now I have people contacting me asking what's up with the issues between myself and the co-presidents after the "obvious discord" displayed at the meeting last week. I feel the need to defend myself as they are slandering my good name. I also want to demand a public apology at the next meeting. I have been involved as treasurer for several schools in the district for four years, was president and also secretary at one time. So I am not new to PTA involvement and have NEVER had any issues with anyone before, either personality wise or performance wise.
The biggest issue I am upset about is that they are making BIG decisions that according to the bylaws should be made by the executive board, which includes myself and the immediate past president. However, we have NEVER once been asked to attend a meeting discussing these things, or asked for our vote.
My last recourse, I think, is - because we are still a PTA and not a PTO yet (we're in the process of changing) - to bring the state PTA into the equation and file a formal complaint against them, but I don't know that that will do anything either.
