Copies of the bylaws are available at all our PTO meetings. THose that wish to obtain a copy are free to take one. However, we do not post them on line or send a copy to all familes. Considering the same ol parents volunteer, those that take enough of an interest in the PTO & want a copy can take one and reference it, if needed.
We have copies filed with each Executive Board person, The Principal has a copy and one is in the master file in our PTO room as well. There is always one handy!
I agree with the posts above. I don't believe that I have ever seen anything in the various Bylaws that I have seen that specifically mandates that they be posted. Though usually there is something to effect that they are to be made available to anyone who asks for them. Again though, it varies from Bylaws to Bylaws...
When I first became President, last year, the group's Bylaws were not posted anywhere. I asked for and was provided a hard copy. When I designed a new website I manually typed the Bylaws and posted them there.
I agree that it is just good practice to do this. It's much easier to say, if someone asks about them, that "they are posted on the website" than saying "I'll get you a copy". It will also come across that your group/officers are working within the guidelines of your Bylaws.
I think they should be given to each member, and in the "old" days that meant a paper copy. Today I think posting on a website or even sending them by email to your membership list would suffice. Another thought is to include them in your PTO brochure or school directory (if those things go only to your members). Whatever you do, don't make a member feel uncomfortable asking to see the bylaws. Make it easy. They are there to guide all the members.
I don't know/think it is mandated, but ours are on our website and are open to alls review. It is just good business to do that I think so no one feels they are out in the dark about them....d
Is it mandated somewhere in "Robert's Rules" that bylaws be posted? Would that be done on a bulletin board or a website? Or must they just be made available on demand? Or is the posting of bylaws decided by each PTO?
