Someone has to step up, whether it is by choice or by default.
For a year and a half, prior to my involement, my group did not have a President, nor even a V.P. The Treasurer and the Assistant Treasurer effectively had to run the group with the assistance of the Volunteer Coordinator and others.
- Let me ask this. If say the two V.P.s accept office and you end up without a President, who will likely run the meetings, provide agendas, and pretty much ensure things get done overall?
I would guess that the V.P.s with hopeful help from others will need to run things without officially being in charge. Hopefully they can accept this.
I've gone through our bylaws and there's nothing else. The only mention of the Principal is that she or a designee is a part of the Executive Committee. I don't believe our Principal would involve herself so deeply as to appoint someone or take on any of the decision making. I will be sending time with her tomorrow night and plan on talking about the situation.
As for the Co-VPs, they both have valid reasons for not taking a board position at all. The one works while going to school and the other one has a husband that travels. They are afraid that they won't be able to meet the commitment of President. I think it's more of a mental thing about the title of President. I know I had the same fears last year and was more comfortable with the VP position. But once the board got rolling I realized I should have stepped up and taken the President position. I'm hoping that is what will happen here, but I don't want them to feel like they are being forced into it. And there's the chance that they realize that the burden of fulfilling the President position, even though they don't hold the title, is too much and they resent the situation and walk away completely.
That wording is assuming that there is a President. Is there further wording that the Principal can appoint a person President. I don't see why these two are not willing to be co-Presidents if your bylaws state that if there is no President they will perform the duties of the President. In essence--they will be the Presidents! Review your bylaws again and speak with your Principal. Maybe he/she can speak to your new co-VP's and see what their apprehension is. Maybe he/she has a person in mind and can appoint them President.

They already know I'll be there until I'm no longer here and at that piont they have my cell #.
Our by-laws state the vp "Acts as an aid to the President and performs the duties of the President in the event that the President is unable or unavailable to do so"
So they board goes on with no named President while the Co-VPs do what it is they said they didn't want to do, be President.
What does your bylaws say? Our bylaws clearly say that if the position of President is not filled or vacated during the term, the vpres. will assume the position and duties.....
You said you would fill the Pres position if you were not moving... how about you fill it for now, but with the understanding that you are moving... help them get things in order this summer and maybe then the two Vp's might feel more comfortable about working together in the position when you move? You could use the summer months to set up the calendar and budget plans and simply help the Vp's to feel better about what is in the plans for the coming year. Good luck! Wish you the best!
