I think it is only fair that students with disabilities need to have their own standard. How can they be held to the same standard? It's not a level playing field and certainly you should want to encourage all the children to participate and be able to reach their goals. I like what Crew Chief said about her school and the way they did it. I would think it would be a sound decision to let the special ed teacher determine the goal/points for each child based on their dissability and what they think they can accomplish. It should be fair and equitable for all the children.
You have to look at it that you are not giving these kids an advantage but giving them a level playing field in which to make accomplishments with the other children.
It seems to me that this is something your school board should be all over. They should be well aware of any disabled or special needs students at the school and the rules and regulations involved.
My last school used AR and I don't recall any alterations to the system based solely on disabilities except that the Special Ed teachers were allowed to set their own students' goals/points just like all the other teachers did for their classrooms.
Perhaps whomever is citing the "law" could provide data and facts for the school to review?

We have an accelerated reader program in our school in which kids read, take tests on the book they read, accumulate points and receive prizes based on their points at the end of the year. Points vary per grade. We were recently told that "by law" we must modify the points for a deaf student. Obviously, we want to encourage and support the child in his efforts. However, we are curious if we are legally bound to make exceptions, as this could affect many children with various disabilities:confused: . I would appreciate any information regarding this issue.
