Do it yourself mad science

We just had a Family Fun Night - Science Night.
One of our dads is the science teacher at a local HS and he and his wife organized it. He gave his students an extra credit for manning the hands-on tables, they had The Snake Guy (a local man with lots of snakes) there and the kids all got to hold them, and the Sci. teacher had the table with liq. nit and did all the things with balloons, roses and such - it was a blast and we will definetly do that one again next year. Our parent/community club sponsors our Family Fun Nights so it was free for everyone - just had to make sure parents were with their kids.
Your idea sounds wonderful - contact your jr. high or HS science teachers - see if they'd like to help out.
Good luck with your summer science club - I think that's wonderful of you to do such a thing.

Couldn't a teacher do a mad science demo or series of after school classes?

I am running a small summer science camp for my son and some of his friends because the real camps are so expensive. I am only asking for money for the materials. Is it possible to do something like that for school? You could customize the program for the ages that sign up. Maybe make it a science club.
I'm thinking of the kinds of things that mad science does like making rockets and exploring chemistry. There are also a lot of fun projects in the "Kid Concotions" books. We have a strong Civil Air Patrol that we can ask for aviation classes. There are many museums that lend out exploration kits for $10-30. We have a lot of resources if we just ask.
If you charge only for resources and materials then you could do things that aren't in the school budget but still cheeper than a lot of camps, ect. Obviously you could make some type of arrangement for students who can't afford it.
Is that a crazy idea? Would it be too hard to do? Does anyone do somthing like this during the school year or over the summer?
