This is not as timely, but something to think about: October is fire safety month. The Fire stations will send out teachers with age appropriate lessons, coloring books and the firetruck to climb through for any organization. The first time I called they were desperately underbooked and willing to come to a 7 girl scout troup at my home.
I thought I'd post this under your topic because it kind of goes along with it.
THe local firedepartment will send out their dive team to talk to the kids for free about water safety. This time of year in the cold areas where lakes freeze up is a great time to take advantage of this program. They will talk to the kids about this subject and about the dangers of going on lake ice in the winter.
The Coast Guard will be coming to our school to speak about boat and water safety. They said to keep each group under 50 and they will do them every 45 minutes or so all day long. They bring along some props and say the kids will really like it. They will make each assembly period age appropriate since we're K-8. Although they haven't come yet, I thought it was a good idea to pass on as summer will hopefully be here before we know it! And best of all ... IT'S FREE!!
