Peter Roop visited and signed books for our k-3rd grade class. He visited with the parents the night before and then visited with each grade the next day. He had some very interesting stories.
A few years ago a local author was releasing a new book the same day as a book fair we were doing with Barnes and Noble. He was thrilled (NO REALLY!!) with the invitation and we all had a great time (I even got a book signed 'When did I met You Grandma') He read to the kids two of his books and had his own little book signing!
It may be worth checking into. The author was someone the store manager knew of, it's worth a few phone calls.
We have also invited the mayor to come and read to our students (great PR for him and it wasn't election time SO we felt okay there) Even local celebs would be fun. One more for ya , whe my daughter was in first grade, each parents was asked to spent their lunch hour (or whatever worked out for them) with the kids during storytime and read their favorite story. Unfortunatly my husband picked for me the 'Sniches'- that Dr. Suess tounge twister about the ones with stars and ones without....yeah, could have died but had a great time!
