Question: School treasure wanting control of account

Our new school board treasurer is contacting our school PTO's and telling us that any monies raised by students (selling cookie dough, tickets, etc) is to go into an account managed by her or another appointed school official. She says this is a law but I've not been able to find this law anywhere. I've been involved in PTO for over 8 years and our groups have never had any problems whatsoever until we had a new district treasurer brought in. If this is the law, we will gladly obey. However, I feel a little strange about turning over tens of thousands of dollars to our school board with basically no control of it. Has anyone else ever heard of this or have any advice?

Does your group have it's own EIN number? If so PTO's are independent groups, we always suggest that a good working relationship with administration is the best practice. You may want to ask why they would like to have control of the money, what their plans are. Good luck-Cheryl PTO Today

I’m in Ohio and this has NEVER been asked of us. We have our own EIN as well. If you have your 501c3 legally you are a separate nonprofit and the school board has no rights to any of your information.
