Advice from PTO Today

A teacher who is also a parent can make a really good addition to the leadership of your group. Often, they have insights to processes at the school that are helpful to the group. And if they are willing to step up as a parent, they are obviously invested. Just give some thought of how to handle the possibility of an occasional conflict of interest for the teacher. If there were a vote pertaining to his or her particular classroom, it's best that he or she not participate. But if a vote concern school wide issues, the teacher can certainly vote. We'd recommend checking with your group's bylaws and with your district. There may be rules in the PTO bylaws that would prevent this and some school districts do not allow school employees to hold a school-related elected position. Good luck!
