Question: Low-cost family welcome events?

Our group is looking for a way to introduce new families to the school. We don’t have a lot of funds to work with. Any suggestions?

There are lots of simple ideas for welcoming new families. One of Elly’s favorites is a boohoo breakfast. Kindergarten parents escort their kids to class, then have breakfast together courtesy of the PTO.

If you’re looking for something more in the line of getting kids and parents acquainted with the school, a scavenger hunt is a nice idea. Families get a map of the school and clues that lead them through the school’s facilities. In each room, your searchers pick up a sticker to add to their map. The hunt ends with some food and fun and a chance for parents to sign up to help your group throughout the year. For example, a clue might lead you to the library (“When Mrs. XX invites you to ëcheck out’ a book, this would be the place to look!”) or cafeteria (“Walk slowly to this room and have a seat when it’s time to relax and eat”).

The best way to make sure your welcome event is successful, no matter which activity you choose, is to make direct contact with the parents you most want to reach: those who are new to the school. Flyers work, but phone calls are better.
