My Tip of the Week: How to Have More Effective Family Events
My tip this week involves a research-backed way to make those family events even more effective for your school: Collaborate with your teachers to connect some key academic goals with your family events. Is your school putting a big emphasis on raising math grades this year? How about holding a Family Math Olympics, then? Can your geography teacher (or music teacher, or both!) be part of an International Night where student presentations are mixed with the foods and dance and music from the many cultures represented in your school?
Parent Groups in the News - Weekly Round-up Jan. 19, 2010
Lots of PTOs and PTAs in the news. Here's a round-up of some recent articles and blogs.
Parent Groups in the News- Weekly Round-up January 2010
Well happy Friday PTO Today community! Can you believe that January is coming to an end? Felt like a fast month to me, how about you? When you live in New England, winter months flying by is a good thing.
Parent Groups in the News - Weekly Round-up Feb 4. 2010
I continued to be inspired by the creative ways that parent groups raise money and/or create a sense of community at their schools. Here a few of my favorite event articles in the news this week:
Parent Groups in the News: Weekly Round-up 2/19/10
This week's round-up highlights projects and events that underscore the mission of school parent groups.
Video Blog: Are You Promoting Your Group’s Good Work?
Here's another way to ask that question: are you bragging enough about your PTO or PTA? In this week's video blog Tim says that groups may not realize it, but not boasting enough can have a negative affect on your ability to recruit more members/volunteers and fundraise successfully.
Chat with Tim About Growing Parent Involvement
How to get more parents involved with your parent group is a hot topic. No surprise to you, right?!
My Tip of the Week: Make Teacher Appreciation Week Memorable
Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up May 3-7, and I love the creative ways parent groups say thanks to teachers. One favorite: the group that had students contort into different positions to make letters with their bodies. They spelled out "Thanks for All You Do." A parent photographed it, put the photo on poster board, then had all the kids sign it and write a word of thanks. That's sure to warm a teacher's heart.
My Tip of the Week: Lighten Up!
How Many PTOers Does It Take To Screw In a Lightbulb?
My Tip of the Week: Tell us Your Story
The deadline for our annual Parent Group of the Year search is next Tuesday, June 1. First of all, just a reminder that we're offering up to $6,000 in cash and prizes this year with help from our generous sponsor, World's Finest Chocolate. All you have to do is tell us your story. You'll find all the details and the entry form here
Tim's Tip: Create One "Wow" PTO Event
Take a look back at your just-ending PTO year. Do you have one really memorable event that went off great, one that people remember and that has become identified with your PTO or PTA group?
My Tip of the Week: Keep Track of Potential Volunteers
With school opening up, do you have a plan to connect all those parents who say they want to help with actual volunteer opportunities? For too many groups, the plan is a nice Open House speech followed by a sign-up sheet that winds up in the back of a file somewhere. Two months later, the leaders of those groups are frustrated by a lack of volunteers and a whole bunch of parents are wondering why the cliquey PTO doesn't call. Ugh.
Video Blog: How To Improve Communications & Get More Parents Involved
My Tip of the Week: Recognize the Under-Recognized Volunteer
Every parent group has several volunteers who quietly, very quietly, are essential to the PTO's success. And yet these volunteers are often thanked least and taken advantage of most of any parents in your school.

Chat With Founder & Editor of PTO Today this Friday
We'd like to invite you to a Q & A session - live on our Facebook page - this Friday, November 5th, from 1-2pm EST. You've read Tim's tips and you've had your questions answered by Craig, editor of PTO Today, in our Ask a Question section. This Friday you will have a chance to connect with them "live."
