Hi, Thanks for writing back! This seems like such a fun event! But, yes, I need details about logistics.. I'm brain dead when it comes to figuring these things out. For instance.. who decides who wins? Do you have judges? How do you get instructions to be clear to everyone, do you have a "rules" announcer? Did you give away any prizes? If it's easier, you can email me directly.. I'd really like to try something like this. Our functions have been pretty boring in the past and for the 5th graders I'd like to get more parents involved. Thanks for all you can tell me!

Hi Pam...sorry I haven't written sooner, but I only pop on every now and then. If you want, I can sent you the specific games we played, but most of my ideas came from a site called www.funattic.com.

I had families reply in advance so I knew how many people were going to show up. I separated them into 4 teams and just used a simple colored stamp on their hands to identify what team they were on. There was no overall winner, but we just announced 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place after each activity. Parents were require to play...that was what made it so much fun!

I had one parent read the rules and start the game for each activity we did so that I could also have fun playing with my kids. Any things we needed to use like hoola hoops, cones and balls were all lent to us by the school gym teacher.

I did modify some of the games from that site just to suit the number of people we had and the ages that attended.

We took a short break about halfway through the night to have snacks and drinks. The only thing you have to watch out for during that time is that the kids can get a little out of control so I'd keep it as short as possible, if you decide to do snacks at all.

If you want the exact games, let me know and I'll post them for you.

To PTAJUDY..

I read in your post about a "Family Color War" and that sounds very interesting to me. I'm searching for new ideas for our school and I was wondering if you'd give me some details about this event?

Thanks,
Pam

We have a PJ party. The teachers read to the kids in the gym. All kids and parents come dressed in their PJs. It's a great thing to do the night of the Scholastic Book Fair. We've had ice cream socials, a Kindergarten Kampout, Dad's Night, and a Beach Party complete with DJ too.
