We also do our carnival in April-a bit too cold in NY to have a dunk booth. We have no room for it inside. Only parents and school staff get put in jail and it costs .50 to put someone in BUT it costs $1.00 to post bail if you want to get them out (most likely so they can get put back in) before the alloted time. Thats always a good money maker and the "convicts" get fed pretty good, too (cheese and crackers, veggies and dip).
Our most excellent part of our carnival is the cardboard maze. Some of the dads put it together and we get the boxes from furniture stores. Our school is only 5 years old and we have a huge basement. To the kids its like the dungeon-no one ever goes there! When we had the first maze there it was great!
Wow, Scottmom#1! Our dunk tank rental only costs us $80 from the local rental store. We made over $300 profit on the dunk tank. Admittedly, I can't say teachers beg to do it! But, I do have 5 of my 8 1/2 hour slots filled and I'm sure I'll find other "victims".
The jail is actually an idea I adapted from this site a while back. Kids pay the 'jail keeper' a certain amount of tickets to throw their favorite (or least favorite!) teacher in jail (we made our jail out of pvc pipe.) The teacher then has to beg for a certain amount of tickets for 'bail'. The kids love it, the teachers are good sports about it, and we made quite a bit of money from it!

We rent our dunk tank from a party rental store. It run around $350 for the entire day. Our problem is getting volunteers to do it. It also doesn't make its money back and has long lines. We did a sponge toss in place of it and had really good results.

We rent the big inflatable moon jump, but the obstacle course sounds really neat.
We have rented bounce houses in the past but this year I would like to get a rock climbing wall for the kids. I think they would enjoy that.
The other ideas are great too. Its my first year as pres so I'm trying to keep some things the same and some things different.
How do you do the dunk tank? Do you make it yourself rent not sure where I would go for this.

We've done the t.p. toss but put a picture on the wall of our principal as a target.
