We just invite dads/moms to come have a time with the teachers. They get an update on the kids and classroom activities and requirements. The kids go on to the gym and the parents have a brief (20 min) visit with the teacher and gets everyone on the same page/team.
We do 'Movin' and Groovin' with Moms' and 'Fitness Friday with Dads'. Both are exercise based and run from about 7-7:45am. For the Dad morning, We have a Crossfit instructor lead a little workout (they come for free, in exchange for advertising) and then the PE teachers have little exercise stations the second half. For the Mom morning, one of our Moms volunteers to lead a Zumba routine for the first half, then the PE teachers do the stations for the second half. PTO provides a small snack (granola bars) and water bottles. It's a big hit at our school!
We're having the same issues in SC. We've asked our cafeteria's food supplier for suggestions. They have a muffin that meets the federal standards, but we're going to taste-test it to see if it's worth doing. Maybe mini quiches? Build-your-own yogurt parfaits?
Maybe it is important to focus on the purpose of the event -- bring in moms before school to hang out with their kids, get to know their kids's friends, etc. In that case, maybe a quick activity in the classroom or a gallery walk of their recent work. Just call it Morning with Moms.
These food regulations are making us change a lot of our plans.
We had dinner with dads at night (it was free but the dads were so generous that we made tons from a tip can) WE aslo did a look alike contest!!
