Just an update...I do know for a fact that this has been going on....I was invited to join in on it...I was told by a participant that they have their thermos's filled with mixed drinks...so no one will know........
I have discussed this issue with the board and confidentially with the principal and we have decided that instead of having the parents decorate this year we will have the students decorate during the school day. I think that by doing it this way I was not pointing the finger at anyone and the kids can finally be able to be involved with their carnival. Thanks for all your help:)
I'd be like anonymous and want to make sure more details. If the entire school is alcohol free by rule at all times, then these parents should follow the rule. However, if that isn't the rule, then I don't think it would always be wrong to have alcohol at a nighttime controlled event. Maybe there's a diplomatic way to discuss this. Alcohol does not = out of control or irresponsible. We have beer and wine on sale at our annual auction.
Do you know for a fact that it is a "Booze Fest?" Do you have sufficient evidence to accuse these people or are you giong on here say? I personally can't imagine anyone who says that they are doing something for the good of children getting drunk at the school. #1, there probably is a custodian in the bldg., #2 you never know the risk of someone just stopping in, or a teacher working late. I can't imagine any parent giving the okay to their child that it is okay to drink at a school. However, I can imagine someone gossiping to that fact because they may have a personal grudge. If there is one big decoration, put it up and then go out to a bar if you feel the need to celebrate your accomplishment with alcohol. Just make sure before you make a stink that it is actually going on. Otherwise you will alienate others from ever helping in the future for fear of what they may be accused of.
We have a plaque at our school which states this is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco free school. I feel that this winter decoration committee is setting a very poor example for the PTO, school and students. If they want to party they should do this off school grounds. Please remember that PTO's and PTA's are invited guests of the school and should respect this.
Crystal, I'm with you - it's not appropriate. And I would expect it would be against your school/district rules to have alcohol consumed on the campus. It is definitely an interesting "tradition"...
