Hi folks,
Pickalilys, thanks for raising a few questions that lots of PTO leaders struggle with and thanks to our friends MiDad and New PTO president for having such great suggestions.
I thought it would help to send along a few links.
It is really worth thinking about how to get the word out about all the things your group does. Sometimes, parents are cranky about the PTO because they don't know about all the great stuff you do on behalf of your school. This article gives some great tips on how to "toot your own horn.''

At my old PTO, we would periodically send out an update of recently completed projects, etc. with a note along the lines of, "Here's what your generous donation has helped pay for....."
Also, your message raised the issue about dues. I thought I would provide a link on some recent discussions on dues and the pros and cons of dues. We think going without dues can actually boost involvement. Worth consideration:

Good luck with all you are doing!
