An idea that I am trying to implement is a in-school pen pal/mentoring program. The 5th graders will work with 2nd, 4th w/ 1st, and 3rd w/ K. Each week the kids will take approx. 15 mins to respond to each other- they can find out about each other, ask about a test result or plan to meet up somewhere. This helps with reading, writing and social skills. At the beginning of the program the kids will meet to put a face with a name and again at the end of the year. Parental notification and approval is essential as the students may exchange personal information such as phone #'s, etc. You can also check with a school in your own area. Good luck!
