We've looked at this issue quite a bit, and my current conclusion is to continue to do things the same way. We could eliminate the possibility of email display in profiles and recommend that no one ever type their email addresses in messages, but that would reduce the amount of networking and sharing that goes on. I hate that idea.
I agree with others here who say that this kind of marketing can and should be a reflection on a company. I think it's certainly fair to judge a company (in part) by its marketing practices.
If you get an email like that, I think Tim would like to be notified. I have forwarded similar messages to him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and he copies me on the very nice, but very firm email he sends to the "culprit".
Excellent advice about the virus checker dcd. I have mine running 100% of the time and have automatic updates and all files are scanned incoming, outgoing, even when I open them in Word or Excel, etc... (I've had to reformat too many hard drives when no antivirus programs were running.)
