If you can't have a fund raiser in the school for the relief efforts, why not do something outside of the school. One of our local neighborhoods had a lemonade stand to raise money for the Red Cross. The local kids raised almost $1,000. How about a car wash at a shopping center put on by kids, or selling kid made red, white and blue ribbon lapels? I think it is great that America's youth are all trying to find a way to help. It is healing for them as well.
hi, I'm pta pres at a northern va school, thankfully none of our families lost anyone on the dulles airport plane that slammed into the pentagon, or anyone actually at the pentagon. Our county has a policy that prohibits elementary schools from fundraising for organizations so we can't even do a loose change drive. This drives me nuts since I think it would really help the kids feel like they could do something. I think perhaps we can collect "supplies" instead, the principal is looking into it. It's just very weird here now, between trying to keep things "normal" for the kids, yet having very strict id policies at the school, doors locked etc, and watching the F-16's flying over fairly frequently. Nothing will be "normal" for a long time. maggie

Keep Freedom's Light Alive
The school's of North Attleboro, Massachusetts are sending a single white
bulb (the type you put in the plastic holiday candles) home with all school
children. The children are being asked to display these lights in their
windows in an effort to show American solidarity in light of the recent
tragedies, and to honor those who have lost their lives -- "A bright light
in a dark tunnel". This gesture is not much but symbolic gestures seem to
be something that we can do right now. It is something our children can do.
Hopefully it shows that we as Americans, regardless of our many differences,
can and always will be a united peoples.
We are inviting you and your school system, as well as school systems across
the nation, to join us in this effort. We would really like this to be a
national endeavor. If you know of any other schools that may be interested
please e-mail this to them.
Our bulbs (4,637 of them) are being donated by local businesses (Walmart
being one of them). Perhaps you could ask your local retailers to do the
same.
We are also asking the our students to break into their piggy banks and we
are collecting these donations at our school. Our donations are then being
given to a local bank which has a disaster relief fund for this particular
disaster. You can check with your local banks or donations may be made to
the American Red Cross.

We are about 150 miles NE of NYC so many of our kids have been to the city and really feel the impact of the tragedy (like many others around the country). We are an elementary school (K - 5). The day of the tragedy there were counselors at all of our schools to help the children deal with their feelings and they've been there all week. The principal sent home a note letting us parents know exactly what the children were told. Different teachers let their class watch the news on the tv while other teachers, thankfully, left it up to the parents on how much they wanted the children to know.
Tonight our high school is holding a candlelight prayer vigil in the courtyard and I just found out that one of the classes are putting cans in each class and calling it "Children to Children". Any money raised will go to the firefighters who lost their lives' children.
For those who want to contact schools in NY & NJ, I'd like to suggest you contact schools in southwestern CT, too. Many people in those towns commute to NY as well. Even here in southeastern CT we have felt the impact. Several of the dead or missing are from local towns, and it seems like everyone knows someone who was there, or should have been there that day.
Perhaps you could check the national PTA website for schools in those areas. Or, search the internet for PTO websites. You may get e-mail addresses for PTO/PTAs or the schools and you can contact them directly.
Okay another thought, how can we contact the New York and Jersey PTA Org. to offer anything... cards, drawings, love.....
My heart is in NY (still there when I visited in 1989) my flag is flying proudly; and my children know the President is taking care of business. All those postcards and tourist stuff my kids once thought was just junk now have a whole new meaning. I don't think I have ever treasured the memory of a study tour as much I will the one I took to NY and but my hand on the buildings that are now rubble and my children will never know........
