Frustrated

That's the bottom line. You have 3 more years in the school and why hate it if you and the others back down and let him have his way. It is a transition year and you don't know what administrative changes he must be contending with.
Ask to sit down with him and discuss the PTO and how much or little he wishes you to have involvement. It could be that the school he came from the PTO was a controlling group that made his life hell. Just ask that he be open to listening to your side as you will be open to hearing his before any decisions are made. You need to work together and both see the benefits of the PTO in the school to fund activities that are not in his budget. If you took out all the activities that PTO's do for the school, teachers would be crying for a break from the day to day schedules. They need the assemblies, class trips, parties, & special events just as much as the kids do.
But the bottom line is that you are there for the kids, not for his thumbs up. It would be nice if you had a cordial, working relationship, but that may not always be the case. But for the sake of the kids, try and meet & come to terms.

Thank you all so much for your input. I've been really frustrated lately, but in the end, I'm there for the kids. My son loves seeing me at his school working hard. He has 3 more years before he graduates, so hopefully I can hang in there.

it almost makes you wonder how other areas of school management are being handled.
it never hurts to let the folks in the district office know about these things that really are important to the school and the kids.
after all, if no one speaks up, how will the district know this is going on and get things moving in the right direction? you cant expect the person responsible for your problems, to solve them, so youve got to address the right person. good luck

Well, that's just snotty to not include your info in the newsletter. And inexcusable to exclude you from an event you'd already committed to. Believe it or not, some principals think parent groups have too much power and influence at their schools and work hard to 'keep them in line'.

I forgot to mention that none of the PTO events are put on the school calendar.

We did have a meeting at the beginning of the year to inform the new principal about the PTO and what we do for the school.

We recently had an important event at school that PTO members committed to - and we were excluded from the event. I'd say that that shows the PTO is not valued.
