"There has been the possibility of a legal issue already and school has not started yet. " you say. then his is CLEARLY something for the school and district to handle. not a parent group.

Thank you to everyone for all of your input.

- Just to address the "cattieness" situation... this is not a matter of personal differences. Nor is it a matter of my personal opinion. This is a matter of an individual who has acted maliciously in the past-and it is not gossip. There have been legal issues involved. There has been the possibility of a legal issue already and school has not started yet. This is not your run of the mill mom. This is not a matter of differing opinions, or being "different" or not attractive. I am a little bit more grown up than that. This is a person with utter disregard for others, including children that are not her own. I am not trying to bar this woman from participation up front. I am trying to prepare for the possibility that we may have to consider removing a member. I want to be sure that, if a particularly bad situation arises, we have that option if we need it, and also, that there is a protocol so that people aren't just removed willy-nilly. While I respect what you are saying, I think some of you may misunderstand me.

To state the obvious, if you live in America, a democracy, where differing opinions and attitudes or as the case may be having a difficult personality (or being overweight or underweight (to be PC) or beautiful or not beutiful, or short or tall, or having a physical or other diablity for that matter, minority race or relgion or political persuasion etc etc etc) ie being DIFFERENT or having a viewpoint not shared by the majority, is not cuase for disciplinary action, whether it seems intuitively obvious in your personal opinion, or not.

Maybe you have personality clashes with another parent, the word 'cattiness' suggests it might just be one of those types of things.

A private club can vote out an unwanted member without cause, but if youre at a public school, you might want to consider what rights all law-abiding parents have to pariticpate in the school and in the parent group, regardless if their opinions or actions might not be your personal cup of tea. As to what others have told you of the parent in question that seems to validate your own thinking -- never trust gossip is a good rule of thumb.

I think kj207 was asking about isolating a reguilkar member of the PTO. I don't think the situation is covered by CrewChief or Persuing...'s suggestions. Nor is it covered in our Charter for that matter.

It is one thing to remove a board member or a committee chair - there should be appropriate wording in a Charter to be able to do that under defined circumstances (even if the definition is "at the discretion of the board").

It is another thing entirely to ban someone from participation in the PTO and it should not be done lightly if at all. There has to be a really egregious (sp?) situation and I mean intuitively obvious to everyone. IMHO, even a PITA can have a valid role playing devil's advocate and bringing another viewpoint to the discussion. Of course, it can easily cross the line and that should be avoided if possible.

Shawn - I like that you are a veritable Barlett's! How's this one:
