Since I am new at PTO, this really helped.
Good luck.
sure NOW they come out with the book I needed 15 years ago in college and parlementarian for our National DECA group!
The times we have had an "upset" parent, I have asked them to continue this conversation afterwards and we will hold off voting as we need to press on to other matters. Now one night this dad just would not shut up and our President was trying so hard but was careful as he was running for School Board. I finally asked the dad what do you what us to do? And he was quiet long enough for me to say, I would really like to be home tonight before midnight as I am giving up my time with my kids to be hear for you. He told me to go home. God Bless security!! yeah, the Athletic Director was there and escorted the dad and his family out of the building and reminded him that he as treated with respect and the PTO Board spent 45 min. with him on an issue that there was nothing we could do for him!
C. Brooks- you just have to be strong and sometimes ask how long do the members want to be here tonight to discuss this issue or can we table it? Should we figure out breakfast or can we move on? Yeah, that sounded kinda harsh but my time is priceless too.....dangnabit!
OK. My meeting was totally hijacked the other night. I had members that kept talking about a subject that wasn't even on the agenda. I couldn't get order to back to business on hand. I really need a simple outline to hand out. One that includes censuring a member for rudeness. Do any of you have something? www.parli.com
is mainly for the president, I need the members to know it is important for EVERYONE to have a say in the matter. We were held over for at least 30 minutes and besides that I felt like a complete novice even though I've done this many times before. I don't think I've ever had such confusion. I don't want things to formal, just fair and fun. Tips are appreciated.

My books is "Robert's Rules of Order: Simplified and Applied." Even I can understand it too. I found it cheap and glad I did. That is the first place where I saw that members should be aware of parlimentary procedures. Then I saw www.parli.com
on here and decided to take a look. It has a pretty good outline for that I could use for members.
I bought "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Robert's Rules" and have found it very easy to understand, also. These books make it easy to tailor Parli Procedure to your group. Smaller, more informal groups can usually go with a less rigid procedure than a larger, more formal group would require. I absolutely recommend that you buy or borrow from your library a book on Robert's Rules.
