Make sure that if at anytime you need to use the kitchen again that you find out of the staff/parent is willing to volunteer her time.
Our school district also requires that we have a township employed kitchen employee on hand if we are going to use the kitchen for any reason. There was a few years when one of the kitchen staff was also a parent. She was always more than willing to volunteer her time in order for us to use the kitchen. BUT if we cant get a volunteer we MUST pay someone on staff. I have no idea how the amount to be paid is determined.
well all thx again for all your input. After a lengthy discussion with officers, principal & many angry members....since check was already issued & next to impossible to get back, and because it was wrongly voted on behind closed doors, the only solution I could make was take it out of the principals fund. She agreed it was done wrong & also agreed to take it out of her fund. whoo hooo!!
deca,
I guess if I were her then, I would just refund that money. Is there any reason for you to think she won't do that if you (nicely) point out what happened in the meeting?
Just last week I was at the middle school parents meeting and a parent offered that if she drove a bus for an event she would refund her pay for that time. good luck!
Kathie,
There is NO way she would of thought she was getting paid. She has a son thats been going to this elementary for 6 years, plus 2 daughters that are younger. She knows how the PTO is run & we have never ever ever ever paid ANYONE to work at the fund raisers. Our school consists of less then 150 students so our money is hard to come by. We would be out of our minds to pay her 25% of our profit for something many others did that same nite. Like someone else had posted on here we would of found someone willingly to "volunteer" if she expected to be paid. I do agree on "get it in writing" , never thought it would come to that but it has! I will update you after our PTO meeting how it turns out. I am going in with my "guns loaded" (figure of speech, of course lol )to fight this!
Serendipity,
Our kitchen isn't even owned or operated by the school district! It is actually "private owned!" The stupid part in our little word is a parent called the Health Dept on the Kitchen Manager because she was thawing meat out over night on the counter. The KM assumed it was the PTO PRes at the time, it wasn't, but that one action by her own staff member messed up our ablility to use the kitchen at all for the last four years.
To pay or not to pay....next time get it in writing!
Deca,
Could it be that the cafeteria worker/Mom thought she was to be paid and needed the money and that's why she agreed to work? And perhaps when she found out (the day of the event) that she was working for free, she was too embarrassed to say anything to you but instead brought it up to her supervisor? Just an idea. And if she thought she was volunteering then wouldn't she want to give back her salary for that night to the parents group? Perhaps a nicely worded note would be in order to her to clear things up.
In our school district the only people allowed to work in the kitchen are those trained in food service and have the security clearance that's required for all district employees. We often use the cafeterias (tables)but not the kitchens.
