mykidsmom, I have never worked without a nominating committee, I think members feel reassured when the nominating committee consists of a good representation of the membership. We do "elect" the committee. I have nominated certain people just to open up the "pool". Anyway I have posted on our Council Website the info I have on it. You will find the actual "script" how we go through the procedure at a meeting at www.fen.com/oh/lakewoodptacouncil.
Go to Help for Units, go to Presidents and it is there under "Mock Meeting". To find the info on Nominating Committees go to Unit Help and it is listed there. I could email both to you if it is easier? Of course I am sure it is not the "only" way to do it. Just how we do it. Best Wishes
I have talked about a nominating committee with a few of the members with no luck. I have recieved the names of a few new parents and really wish I could just appoint them BUT I'm already under the past president's watchful eye to screw up.
How is a nominating committee formed and what do they do exactly?
Whew, angel. Sounds like your board has issues to work out long before you all can start concentrating on the real business of a PTO.
In response to your comment that the new prez has her own ideas about how to run a meeting, you might want to bone up on
Roberts Rules of Order. I recently found 2 condensed books at the bookstore(there are several) that gave me some new insight into the value of RRO. Having a neutral third perspective (RRO's), might be a way to talk about meeting format without a "we/them" viewpoint.
We always sign up committees in the spring. Not all get filled up, and not all get chairpeople, but it's obvious that there are some projects that are too soon or too big to wait until the fall to seek volunteers. We also put the sign-up sheets out again in the fall at our first meetings and at Open House.
I am very surprised that your district Superintendent is involved in your PTO's business. Our PTO does not really report to even the principal, although the she is a member of the Exec Board. We try hard to keep a good working relationship with the admin, since we are there to support them. However, your case sounds particularly unique since you were faced with two active (and warring?) factions.
Good Luck! You can find alot of support and ideas on this forum. And even if you have your own good idea on something, attribute it to something you read on the forum, and then you won't sound like a "know it all"!!
Mightyjo and plw
Thanks....Maybe I should make that call I see about an exec meeting. It will be very hard but I know it is the right thing to do.(I am so sick of the one doing the right thing, tho)It is so hard not to let your feelngs run over when we worked so hard. We have to be careful because the superintendent told us if everyone can't worked together than he will disban us. We've been in place all year and this group has wanted to take over so to speak and even ran a funtion for the kids. But when they tried to re-register this function for next year he said no...that he would not have two seperate groups in his school. Hence the big coo at election time.(they even asked for a recount and it was the two principals and the super who counted them) Any way I will make a call in the next day or so. Thanks again...I wished I would have found this forum sooner!!!!!
Transitions. I know I posted this somewhere else here so forgive me if you have read it. Anyway,I am departing after presiding the 3 out of the last 4 years. The woman who stepped up to take the challenge has some past experience in a PTU and no experience with PTA that I know of. As a matter of fact most of the new board have never been to a meeting, except their election, of course. A fourth grader could run the PTA with the notes I have left. I was fortunate enough to have recently gone through the minutes of the meetings from 1923 to present. This school has been under numerous leaders and boards in those 80 years and not only is the school still standing but, the organization is still growing. I am humbled. I plan to attend future meetings and help her however she is comfortable. Though no longer on the board, I still have one vote and that is all we can ask for! I hope all works out!
Angel, Is your next mtg in late June with the regular membership, or just the exec. board? If full membership, suggest to your new pres. that you have an exec. board mtg first to discuss her new mtg ideas. I understand what you mean about her being familiar w/your old way of doing things before adding new ones. That's where you can actually be quite helpful to your new pres. The fact that she's discussing these things w/you hopefully means that she's interested in a smooth transition. There is at least one article on this site about helping w/a smooth transition between old and new officers.
Try to be as open as you can with her new ideas while at the same time pointing out to her which of your "old" ideas have worked best.
I don't mean to sound like an expert - I'm far from it!! I've just been doing lots of research since I'm moving to pres. after a successful slate of officers. I'm trying to balance an interest in some changes with the fact that things have been running smoothly, hence meaning there is not a need for sweeping changes.
