There's a reason so many room parents return to the classroom year after year. With all that experience, they've certainly learned a thing or two (or twenty) that's worth sharing with all the newbie room moms out there. So without further ado, we’d like to share a few snippets of advice from the veteran room moms in our Facebook community. Cheers to kicking off your first school year as room parent – hopefully, it’s just the first of many more to come!
1. It's okay to make mistakes. Always keep communicating with your teacher as to her wants and needs. Some teachers want a more hands-on type of room mom, and others simply need help with parties and field trips. Always start off the year by asking these 7 questions and the rest will fall into place.

2. Be the group coordinator, but let the people who signed up to help work too! Delegate jobs, and don't try to do it all yourself!

3. Don't stress about fancy, elaborate games and crafts. The kids are so excited at party time that even a simple game will be fun!

4. If you try to do everything, people will feel excluded. Eventually, no one will volunteer to help.

5. Always take time to listen to the kids. No matter how insignificant it may seem, you might be the only one who does.

6. Don't stress. Every little thing you do is a big help. You're allowed to say no, and you don't have to be perfect.

7. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher! They may not want big elaborate parties or snacks. They will know what works best, so don't be afraid to ask!

8. Take all the help that you can get. Be open to help, but stand your ground.

9. Always remember you are there to help the teacher. Don't make her job harder, make it easier. Also just because you are room parent doesn't mean you should do everything. In fact, let other parents in, even if it means you volunteer less in the class. Don't be a class hog!
