I'm fairly new to the PTO as well, I found that effective communication is the key. I've started sending more communication home to the parents, as well as, emails and text messages. Also having a positive relationship with the administration is a must! Without them backing you, it is hard hill to climb.

Taking on the president's job can seem overwhelming and it does take time, but it can be very manageable. As mhnelsopto mentions, good communication is really key. A good starting point might be to review the section on our site about the president's role so you can get a big-picture look at what the job involves. Here's the link. In general, the president is the face of the PTO, representing it to parents, the school, and the community. The president runs the meetings, sets the agenda for the meetings and works with all committee chairs to help make sure events take place and projects get done. The actual time commitment will vary depending on a number of factors, including the size of the school, the number of events and programs, and the involvement level of the parents.
