First steps for a PTO bank account

We are a preschool pto that is part of a community center. We have considered becoming our own non-profit but in the meantime we would like to open our own bank account. What is the minimum we need to do (EIN, 501) to have this set up on our own?

So, the minimum you would need to do is get an EIN to set up a bank account. To get the EIN, you fill out an IRS SS-4 form. You can download the form from the IRS website or apply online.
